The development of computer technology facilitated the emergence of new opportunities and directions in the educational work of the museum. In line with the UNESCO directives concerning digital preservation and the creation of equal opportunities to obtain information, regardless of where they live, the Russian Museum, using computer technology has opened access to a rich collection of the National Art of one of the largest museums in the world.

A significant role in this is given to an extensive network of information-educational centers "Russian Museum: Virtual Branch" (more than 170 in Russia and abroad).

With the creation of the Center for Media of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg has appeared the possibility of more effective coordination of virtual branches in the regions of the country through remote seminars, lectures of experts, as well as a demonstration at the site of the museum, modern features presentation of works of art through the media.
