Folk art and intangible cultural heritage
About the Section
The section participants will discuss the problem of preserving the national character and ethnic cultural traditions of Russia, supporting folk art and developing interregional cultural cooperation. One of the main topics for discussion will be the problem of the “second life” of cultural heritage objects introduced into the UNESCO List of Cultural Heritage.

Biography
Grand Doctor of History, Professor
Dr. Turgaev graduated in 1981 from the Faculty of History of St. Petersburg State University. He earned his doctorate in 1986 and grand doctorate – in 2000.
Since December 2010 Dr. Alexander Turgaev has been the head of the Federal state educational establishment of higher professional education St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture, which has been graduating culture professionals for almost a century. The University offers some 50 programs in the sphere of amateur art, folklore, classical music and academic singing.
Alexander Turgaev is author of more than 70 publications, including five monographs. He is a member of the “Personality. Culture. Society” Journal of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Turgaev has been awarded the Order of Friendship, the Order of Peter the Great 1st Class, and the Medal of Tercentennial of St. Petersburg.
